It is not easy to categorise Living Alone. The main protagonist, Sarah Brown, has been seen as a thinly disguised portrait of the author herself. There are elements of magic and comedy. If nothing else, the novel leaves the reader with memorable flashes of fantasy especially the battle between the English and German witches over the streets of London. Rationality struggles against the irrational and the fantastic in a world which seems increasingly chaotic as millions of young men go to their deaths in the trenches.
